Prior to Christopher Columbus and the age of discovery, sailors often refused to travel to unknown waters for fear of encountering dragons. Maps from that time showed uncharted seas as having huge creatures with wings, horns and claws.

The dragons of Chinese and Japanese mythology were said to spread disease and death among the people. Even so, the dragon remained the emblem of the imperial house of China.
