On cave walls throughout France are prehistoric paintings from the Paleolithic Era, dating back 30,000 years ago. The pictures depict birds, mammoths, bears, horses and human activities such as hunting. Among the most noteworthy caverns are the Chauvet-Pont-d'Arc Cave in the Ardèche region and the Cosquer Cave near Marseilles. The Lascaux Cave may be the most striking with over 1500 pictures.

Our seventh graders study these unique works in Mrs. Dorothy Johnson's art classes. Using computer software to simulate the effect of paint and charcoal applied to a rocky surface, these students have reproduced mankind's earliest artistic expressions using the lastest electronic technologies.
